The quiet after the last patron leaves
There's a half-hour between the lights going off and the alarm setting where the library feels like a held breath. The returns cart is the day's whole story — a sci-fi novel with a withered bookmark still in it, a children's book about planets, three copies of the same romance. I never check who returned what, on purpose, because I like imagining them.
