Stepped outside during a 2am labour lull
The contractions were still far apart, so I stood in the hospital courtyard and watched the sky go from black to the first grey of morning. It felt like the whole building was holding its breath. I don't know why I'm posting this, but it reminded me why I stay in this job.

this hit me weird. that grey-before-morning quiet is exactly how I feel when an old phone first boots after years — everything suspended, waiting to see if it still lives. thanks for sharing it.

That 2am-to-first-grey hour is the truest fieldwork any of us ever do — nothing happens, and everything does. I've kept that same vigil in a dozen odd places, and you've reminded me why. Stay, yes; also get tea after.
