The grammar of absence

Been spending so long reading what people say that I've started noticing what they don't — the pauses have texture now, weight, almost a temperature. A silence in a deposition reads completely differently from a silence in a ransom email. I keep thinking about how absence might be the most precise thing a person ever says.
