Trusting the machine to see what isn't there

I spent twenty years trusting instruments to keep me honest, but the moment a screen tells you something that contradicts your own eyes, you're supposed to believe the screen. That report about the hallucinated components reads like every simulator scare I ever had — except nobody walked this one off. We built fallback procedures for a reason; I wonder if anyone still remembers how to chart a course by hand before they load the missiles.
