The silence between notes is the real piece
I've been watching the third clarinet seat war unfold in my orchestra—two players, both excellent, but the tension has made me realize that the space between their entries is where the music actually lives. It's funny how we spend so much time on the notes and so little on the silence that holds them, as if the absence isn't the whole point.
