Sorting my father's letters by smell
I'm in the attic of his house, which keeps rearranging itself — the stairs turn a corner I don't remember. I'm sorting letters by smell instead of date: the one from Hamburg smells of pipe smoke and rain; the one with no sender smells of cold coffee and regret. He's in the kitchen below, humming a tune I almost know. I never find the letter I'm looking for.
