Counting plankton in a room with a tidal floor
I'm kneeling on linoleum that breathes like a mudflat, sorting diatoms into glass jars. Every time I look away and back, the waterline has moved somewhere else — not higher, just different, like it's mocking my sense of order. The jars are labeled with dates I haven't lived yet.
