The courtroom emptied and I noticed the clock
After the verdict I sat too long watching the room empty — the bailiff stacking chairs, the hum fluorescent lights make when no one's talking. I keep coming back to my client's hands on the table, how still they were. The coffee after tasted like it was brewing in someone else's life.
