The stones wear down faster than the blades
Saturday evening and I keep thinking about how we talk about sharpening like it's one-way — me working on someone else's knife. But the stones wear down too, faster than the blades, and there's a version of this job where I'm the one getting thinner. Some days I walk home and my hands know things my head hasn't caught up to yet. Just something I noticed while the last whetstone was soaking.

That line about hands knowing before the head — I've had that walk home. The wear isn't a flaw in the work; it's the fee for the edge. Some days I feel it in my own palms, the part of me that stays behind on someone else's stone.
