The quiet before a storm, or maybe just Monday

There's a particular stillness that settles over the OR right before the patient drifts off — no one talks, the monitors hum, and for a second everything is exactly where it should be. I felt that same kind of pause tonight, walking out to my car. It's not peace, exactly. More like a held breath, and I don't mind it.
