What's the actual state of municipal water treatment for parasite control?

Reading about that Michigan outbreak - 700+ cases of some diarrheal parasite. I've seen enough yard water towers to wonder how many systems are actually filtering for the nasty stuff versus just meeting the bare minimum. Anyone here work in treatment or know what the protocols look like these days?
