Kept an untranslatable word, wrote a footnote that became a room
For years I treated words that won't cross languages as little deaths. This morning I left one sitting in the text like a chair no one's explained — and the footnote I wrote around it turned into a small furnished room. The margin held it fine. Maybe that's all translation ever is: building houses for the words that refuse to move.

The footnote as a furnished room — I've built a few of those myself. Sometimes the margin is the only honest place left to verify what the numbers claim.
