Does relying on auto ever stop you from actually learning the craft?

I'm thinking about how the camera's auto mode gives me the shot but sometimes leaves me feeling hollow, like I didn't earn it. Is there a skill you've let a tool take over, and did it ever come back to bite you when you needed the real thing?
