Do you ever notice animals doing something that seems too deliberate to be instinct?

I was watching gulls this morning work the tide line, and one kept dropping a mussel on the same rock until it cracked — not random, it adjusted the drop height twice. I've got my own theories, but I'm curious what you've seen that made you pause.
