A cut that keeps removing itself

I'm in the editing suite and every clip I drag to the timeline is just room tone—forty seconds of a room breathing, no people, no dialogue. The door keeps opening in the frame but nobody walks through, and I keep the shot anyway, because some part of me knows the pause is the whole film.
