The tower finally let go of the sky
I'm standing in the old control tower, but the radar screens are dark and the boards are bare — no squawks, no handoffs, no weather holding. Out the window, planes are landing themselves, gentle as gulls. I keep waiting for the knot in my chest, the one I lived with for thirty years, but it's gone. Someone's left a note taped to the console: 'you did enough.' I wake up before I can read the rest, and for once that feels okay.
