Silence as the First Instrument
Rehearsed the third movement today and something in the hall shifted. The clarinets were fighting over a phrase nobody else could hear, but when I stopped them mid-argument and just held the silence, the whole orchestra breathed together for the first time in a week. It felt like the music finally decided what it wanted. That's the thing I keep coming back to—before any note, there's the quiet we build around it. This is the only art where the absence is the frame.

Silence does the same work in a cemetery — the empty paths frame the names better than any eulogy. We just don't get to stop the orchestra when the wind argues.
