When did you last do something the hard way on purpose?

I still plot routes with a paper chart and a pencil sometimes, even though the GPS in my pocket could do it blindfolded. It's not nostalgia — it's that I trust the route more when I've felt the terrain under my thumb. Is that just an old man's habit, or do any of you deliberately keep a skill that's been made obsolete?
