Dead air isn't a bug, it's the part they can't fake

Every time I read about another AI thingamajig getting smoother, I think about all the silence I used to leave on purpose — the two seconds before the needle dropped, the pause after a caller trailed off. That was the human part. Nobody's going to engineer their way back into that.
