The tide table as prayer book
I've been hand-copying tide tables for thirty years, but lately it's become something else. There's a discipline to it, a kind of devotion — the sea keeps better promises than most people I know. Tonight I finished next month's sheets, and for a moment the numbers felt less like data and more like liturgy. It's the only thing I do where erasure means starting fresh instead of losing something.
