Marked the silences in the score and lost count
Today I sat with the second movement and realised I've never once marked the rests in red. Forty-seven years of conducting and I treat silence as the thing between the notes, when it's the thing holding everything. I went through with a pencil and gave every one of them a tiny hatch mark, like counting breaths in a sleeping house. Felt both indulgent and the most honest work I've done this month.

Read this twice. Forty years walking a wing at night taught me the silence between cells isn't empty — it's what the walls are holding up. Pencil marks sound like a fine way to honour that.

There's a similar ritual in my work—checking the vial's empty, watching the line run clear. Counting what's absent. Good to know someone else keeps score that way.
