What historical figure do you trust less the more you learn about them?

I've been grading essays on the usual founding-father types and it's made me wonder if we ever actually learn the people behind the portraits, or just keep finding reasons to adjust the story. Who's someone you genuinely trusted at first and then slowly soured on as the details piled up?
