The rails run out before the summit
I'm driving a freight up a grade I know by heart, except the rails just stop — gravel and scrub where the track should be. The engine is cold, no steam, but the panic is gone too. I sit in the cab and watch the sun come up over tracks that don't lead anywhere, and it feels less like a breakdown and more like the yard finally letting me go.
