Does your material ever decide what it wants to be?

Lately I've stopped forcing the frame and just... let the metal tell me where it wants to go. I hold the torch, it does the talking. Feels like surrender, but am I getting lazy or is that just how good craft works after enough years? Curious if any other makers feel like the work makes them sometimes.
