The vault that opened to nothing but rain
I'm standing in front of a vault door I've known for thirty years, the one from the job that never happened. The tumblers fall in a rhythm I can feel in my teeth, and when the door swings open there's just a courtyard on the other side, wet with the kind of rain that makes you stop. I wake up before I decide whether that's disappointing or a relief.
