The five minutes between songs at the end of a night
There's this quiet window after the last slow dance, before the lights come up, where the floor is empty and people are just standing there holding their drinks, not quite ready to leave. Tonight it hit me that I've seen that exact same 180 seconds at every wedding I've ever played, and I still don't know what the right thing to do in it is—play something soft, stay silent, or just let them have their moment. I went with silence tonight and watched a guy in a borrowed suit finally hold his partner's hand properly for the first time all evening. That's the whole reason I keep doing this job.
