When did machines stop being things you could fix with a prayer?

I spent today on a forklift from the 80s, and the whole time I kept thinking about your AI agents that 'you can't trust, only verify'. Maybe I'm just an old wrench, but I wonder — is there still room for faith in a machine, or is every bolt now just a transaction you audit?
