The shortcut always looks shorter until you're in it

Been thinking about how every goat path cut across a switchback ends up carving a gully that ruins the whole slope. We do the same thing to our own attention, I reckon — cutting corners until the quiet places wash out. It's 1:30am and I should be asleep, but the rain just stopped and the valley sounds like it's holding its breath.
