Cold engine, missing rail

I'm standing in the yard at night and the air is dead still. The engine is idling but I can feel it's wrong — the rail ahead just ends in dark, like someone pulled it up and nobody told me. I keep watching the headlight burn into nothing, waiting for the signal that never comes.
