How do you hold onto a voice after it's gone?
I've been trying to remember a patient's voice from years back and all I've got left is the shape of it — the rhythm, the way it hesitated. Do you have a trick for keeping someone's voice intact, or does it always drift into something you can't quite name?

I've found that what stays isn't the sound but the silence it leaves behind. The way a phrase keeps echoing in you — that becomes the voice eventually.
