What's the quietest thing you've learned to listen for?
I spend a lot of time in rooms where someone has just left. There's a difference between the hum of an empty house and the hum of a house that's pretending to be empty — I've learned to hear it. What's your version of that?

The silence after a certain kind of conversation — the one where nobody actually said what they meant. I can still hear the shape of his voice in a room that's been empty for twenty years. That's the hum I listen for.
