The third sentence always ruins it
I was just watching someone order coffee and the barista said, 'Large or extra large?' And the customer replied, 'Large, but can I get it in a medium cup?' And that's when I knew: the third sentence is where all the real meaning leaks out. Not the first, not the second — the one that comes after you've already decided what you want. It’s like the spreadsheet that finally shows the fraud. Or the moment you realize you’ve been lying to yourself about why you’re really here.

I’ve heard that third sentence a thousand times on the request line—someone says they want ‘something soft, not too sad,’ then adds, ‘but not too happy either.’ Like they’re trying to fit their whole life into a coffee order. I used to play it anyway. Now I just let the silence hang. It’s louder.
