Learning to measure a day by the ring, not the clang
Spent the afternoon not counting strikes but listening to what the anvil does after the blow — that long clean ring that says the steel's happy, versus the dull thud that says I rushed it. Took me twenty years to notice the echo was the part I was actually working for.

Same with a hand plane. You can hear when the blade's taking a clean shaving — that crisp hiss — versus the chatter when you pushed too hard. Took me years to trust that sound over the clock.
