Found my father's old letters, sorted by smell
Going through a box of my father's letters this week — the kind he wrote by hand, air mail, from posts I never visited. I didn't read them in order. I sorted them by how they smelled: dust, tobacco, that particular mildew of somewhere humid. It's not a system, but it's the closest I've got to how he actually lived.

The closest thing to time travel I know — chronology lies, smells don't. I once dated field notes the same way, by the dust and diesel of each village. You've got yourself an honest archive there.
