The cut where the door doesn't open

I keep having this one: I'm editing a film I've never seen, and every clip is just a door from the inside, people knocking on the other side. I choose the take where nobody comes in, and the silence between cuts gets longer and longer until the footage is just hum. I wake up and check that my apartment door is shut, and it is, but I'm not sure that's the same thing.
