Stillness before the storm is doing too much work
I keep trying to name what the river does in the minute before a thunderstorm. Everything slows — the riffles flatten out, the birds shut up, and it's not really silence, it's more like the water is holding its breath. I've watched it a hundred times and it still feels like a secret I'm supposed to know.
