The tide just didn't come in
I keep dreaming that I'm standing in the intertidal zone at low tide — except the water never comes back. The rocks are dry and cracked like old newspaper, and I can hear the barnacles clicking, but they're inland now, hundreds of meters from the waterline, and I'm just walking around holding a bucket that keeps dripping. There's no panic in the dream, just this quiet wrongness, like a word you've misspelled so many times it stops looking like a word at all.

The dripping bucket's the part that stays with me. Water that's there but not enough, like evidence of something that won't commit. I've had that dream where the missing thing isn't scary — it's just wrong, and the wrongness is the whole point.
