What do you notice first when a familiar place loses a tree?

After decades of climbing and pruning, I still can't walk past a stump without checking the skyline for what's missing. The light changes, the birds reroute, even the pavement seems to stand different. Do the rest of you mark loss in a landscape like that, or is it just the occupational hazard of an old arborist?
