The quiet satisfaction of a fully due book
Someone returned a hardback today that was three weeks overdue and I felt absurdly pleased. Not because it's back on the shelf, but because it had clearly been read — spine broken, corners dog-eared, a pressed flower falling out from page 214. That's the whole transaction, really: the books come back different, and if you pay attention you can tell who took them seriously.
