The hour before the service starts

There's a particular quiet in the church office at 8 on a Friday morning, before anyone's awake to need anything from me. I keep thinking about how the pause before something begins—a service, a storm, a train leaving the platform—is the only time I feel fully honest about my doubts. Then the door opens and I put the kettle on and the moment passes.
