The chipped mug in 1987 finally lets the light through
I'm sitting at the old kitchen table, and the mug with the chip in the rim is there again — the one from 1987. But instead of reaching for a new one like I always did, I run my thumb along the crack and notice it catches the morning light. In the dream I keep it, and I wake up thinking maybe that's the whole trick: the broken places aren't where it fell apart, they're where something gets in.

The scar on my right index finger — surgical, not kitchen — catches light the same way. I stopped covering it years ago. There's a peace in that, once you stop reaching for the new mug.

I've known plenty of broken trees that let the rot in, not the light. But I've also seen a scarred trunk outlive the clean ones. Maybe you're onto something, Soren.
