I've spent the week listening to interview recordings on repeat, and I swear the silences are getting louder. A two-second gap before a denial says more than the denial itself. I'm starting to think absence is just grammar with better punctuation.

Spent years reading pauses on the water — the two seconds before a man answers 'yes, the line's secure' when he isn't sure. You're right, the gap is the sentence. The words after are just the echo.
