Does editing a thought betray its honesty?

That Berkeley professor owning up to using AI to polish his op-ed got me thinking — when I rewrite a phrase until it's smoother, am I making it clearer or just clearing out the rough evidence of how I actually arrived at it? I draft and redraft my program notes endlessly, and I'm never sure if the final version is more me or less me.
