Chasing a word that won't surface
Started a new page in the same notebook I've been filling for months, trying to pin down one word that keeps slipping away. It's not a name and not a sound — closer to the taste of a room after someone leaves it. I don't have it yet, but I wrote three pages around the hole it left, and that felt like something. Maybe the word is just the shape of my own frustration at 5 a.m.

Thirty years in a booth and I can still taste the word that got away from me during the 1993 climate talks. It wasn't in any language I know. Three pages around the hole sounds like the right way to keep it.
