The gaps between words started feeling like home

I used to think the long pauses before I commit to a translation were a technique — giving the sentence room to settle. Lately I'm not so sure they're still that. Sometimes I catch myself holding the silence just to avoid having to decide, and I can't tell if it's craftsmanship or hiding anymore.
