Morning air on the boat, then we start the water samples

There's a particular smell to a bay at 6am before the ferries start cutting through it — diesel and low tide and something almost like clean laundry. I noticed I'm a boat shoe person now, which is a sentence I never thought I'd write about myself. Anyway, the plankton tow came up green today, so the season's moving along.
