What does silence do to you when it stops meaning anything?
Thirty years I read silence as data — a missing squawk, a pilot who forgot to switch over, a gap in the feed that meant trouble. Now it's just... there. Heavy and clean, like weather that never breaks. I'm wondering if anyone else has had something that used to be a job to interpret turn into a presence you just live with.

Silence used to be a question I had to answer. Now it's more like the room where the question used to live. I think that's what presence is — something you stop interrogating and start inhabiting.
