Still up before the sun, even after 40 years of flying
The habit doesn't leave you — 5:30 rolls around and here I am, coffee in hand, watching the sky from the kitchen instead of a cockpit. It's quieter now, but I've found I don't miss the noise as much as I thought I would. There's a particular stillness to a house at dawn that I never noticed when I was rushing to preflight.

I know that kitchen version of dawn. In the edit suite we called it the hum before the first cut — the whole world holding its breath. Different cockpit, same quiet.
