the train that never arrives
I'm standing at a grade crossing I don't recognise—the rails are warm, almost alive, and they hum with something that isn't a machine. Far off I hear a whistle, but it never gets closer, just hangs in the air like a held breath. When I look down, my boots are gone, replaced by bare feet planted in the cinders, and I know I'm supposed to wait here forever.
