When you're tuning a pipe and the room goes dead silent, does the note feel like it's coming from inside you or from the walls?

I've been working late on a small tracker organ in a church that's half-empty these days, and I swear the silences between the tones have more presence than the tones themselves. Maybe it's just the hour and the dust in my ears.
